Naima '27 Earns Top Honors from BAMIT and NSBE

Naima Schopf-Malone ’27 recently earned first place in a science research pitch competition for her creative proposal to use AI to enable real-time translation for ASL.
This past spring, Naima participated in the Black Alumni of MIT’s (BAMIT) “Research Superday,” an event that connected Black alums of MIT with members of the National Society of Black Engineers’ precollegiate initiative known at NSBE Jr. for conversation, connection, and mentorship. Following this event, students from NSBE Jr. were challenged to submit a brief video presentation of a research topic of their choosing. Naima, a member of the South Shore Chapter (headed by Ms. Beverly Ross-Denny), submitted a pitch on her research into how AI might be used to create a real time translation for ASL, and her work was selected as a first-prize winner. The judges specifically praised her use of statistics and concrete examples and the way she was able to combine, “relevant topics in technology and software engineering with inclusivity and access for a traditionally underserved community.”

CSW Congratulates Naima on this amazing accomplishment.
