Michael Fleming '81, Development Committee Chair

Michael Fleming is the President and Founding Executive Director of the David Bohnett Foundation, a grantmaking organization dedicated to “improving society through social activism.” Since 2000, he has directed over $130 million in funding to causes aligned with the foundation’s mission.
He has served on numerous civic boards, including the Los Angeles Board of Water and Power Commissioners, the Getty House Foundation, and the Los Angeles Convention Center Commission. Appointed by President Obama in 2010, he joined the White House Council for Community Solutions, and in 2021, Governor Gavin Newsom named him to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission.

Deeply committed to education, Michael is President of the LAUSD Education Foundation and serves on the boards of Harvard Kennedy School’s Carr-Ryan Center, University of Limerick’s Kemmy School of Business, and The Cambridge School of Weston. He has taught at UCLA since 2003, where he won the 2023 Student’s Choice Outstanding Faculty Award, and previously taught at NYU.

He also serves on the board of KCRW, where he was Chair and Co-Chair of its capital campaign, and is active in advocacy organizations like Guns Down America and the Movement Advancement Project.
Michael is married to retired California Court of Appeal Justice Luis A. Lavin.
